Background on Abortion for Trust Women Week
January 24th, 2012 by catherine
There will always be women who need access to abortions.
Abortion is basic health care for women.
- 1 in 3 American women will have had an abortion by age 45.
- About 50% of pregnancies in the U.S. are unintended.
- 4 in 10 unintended pregnancies are terminated by abortion.
- In 2008, 1.21 million abortions were performed in US.
- Teen pregnancy accounts for only 2 in 10 of all abortions
performed in the US. - Women in their twenties account for more than half of all
abortions performed in the US. - 88% of abortions occur in the 1st 12 weeks. Only
1.5% occur later in the term. - 6 in 10 women having abortions already have one or more
children. - These women often cite the need to care for their children as a primary reason for choosing to have an abortion.
Catholics support birth control and have abortions.
- “ Sensus fidelium —the graced and experience-fed wisdom of the faithful that has always been one of the sources of truth in the Catholic tradition.”
- 98% of sexually active Catholic women have used a form of contraception banned by the Catholic Church.
- As recently as 1968, a majority of the Pope’s advisors agreed that there was no pastoral reason to ban Catholics from using contraception.

Celebrate the Meaning of Roe: Vote-Special Election Feb. 15 – Elect MaryJane Shimsky!

Tuesday February 15th
Astorino’s next mini-me—anti-choice Nicholas DeCicco who refused to complete Choice Matters’ questionnaire. DeCicco, like Marcotte, will walk the Right-to-Life Astorino anti-choice anti-child anti-family walk, voting as he is told.
In November 2009, Westchester elected a Right-to-Life (RTL) County Executive, Rob Astorinio. We have been paying the price ever since.
Astorino’s Right to Life beliefs have already corrupted the budget process. Laws are not the only things at stake. Budgets decide who matters.
Remember it was Astorino who took a sledge hammer to child care funding, pulverizing it by taking away 4.3 million dollars—this after the most recent census data reported that 16.7 percent of Westchester children under 5 years of age are living in poverty, which is up from 9.6 percent in 2005—and added new positions for his political cronies. When those positions were cut by the County Legislators, Astorino hired his cronies anyway using empty lines on the budget!

December 28th, 2010 by janeyTonight, MTV will air a special called “No Easy Decision” (11:30/10:30c) that tells the abortion stories of 3 young women.
Abortion has largely disappeared from public debate. Shows like 16 and pregnant, or teens on Juno and Glee are dismissive of abortion. We are anxious to see how abortion will be treated on the MTV program, but glad that the program was made and hope that it leads to thoughtful discussions among young people.
Exhale has started a site called 16 & Loved to give public support to the young women who told their abortion story. Its a wonderful site, please visit and add your comments!
